While LA is known for its car culture, you can get by without one if you stay in walkable neighborhoods like Santa Monica, Downtown, or Hollywood. However, having a car gives you much more flexibility to explore the sprawling city and reach attractions that are far apart. The Metro system is expanding but doesn’t cover all areas yet.
LA enjoys great weather year-round, but spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) offer the most comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is peak tourist season with warm beach weather, while winter remains mild and is perfect for avoiding crowds. Be aware of wildfire season in fall and occasional June Gloom along the coast.
LA traffic is notorious, especially during rush hours (7-10am and 4-7pm). Always add extra time for travel between destinations—what looks like a 20-minute drive on the map can easily take an hour during peak times. Use GPS with live traffic updates and consider scheduling activities outside of rush hours when possible.
Each LA neighborhood has its own character. Visit Santa Monica and Venice for beach vibes, Hollywood for entertainment history, Beverly Hills for luxury shopping, Downtown for arts and culture, Silver Lake for hipster cafes, and Pasadena for beautiful architecture. Don’t try to do everything in one day—LA is huge!
Pack light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat—the California sun is strong! Evenings can be cool, especially near the coast, so include a light jacket. If you’re visiting upscale restaurants or venues, pack one nicer outfit. And don’t forget your swimsuit for the beach!
